    Nazaria Lagos: The Florence Nightingale Of Panay


    During the Philippine Revolution, A woman from Dueñas, Iloilo donated her own hacienda to pave way for the establishment of a hospital for the wounded and sick Filipino soldiers.

    Nazaria Lagos y Labrillaso, born August 28, 1851 in the barrio of Burongan, now called as Jaguimit, Dueñas, Iloilo, was named the “Florence Nightingale of Panay ”, due to her indispensable service to the the country by becoming an exceptional nurse to the revolucionarios. 

    Nazaria was married at the age of 12 to her second cousin Segondo Lagos, the Chief Sacristan of the Catholic Church with whom she had eight children.

    She accomplished several humanitarian advocacy through forming the Red Cross in the Visayan region.

    Aside from becoming the Revolutionary Army hospital's director, she was also the soldiers' first nurse.
